ARC Activities - Recognition
Recognition by Other Organizations
ARC has attracted recognition from several of the world's most respected organizations and institutions including some focusing on human rights and child psychology and health.
The United Nations has accepted into its official record ARC's submission demonstrating that male circumcision constitutes a human rights violation.
We were pleased by the complimentary profile of ARC in an article entitled "The Unkindest Cut" in the Fall 2002 issue of the Harvard Law Bulletin.
We were also gratified by the fact that the Royal Australasian College of Physicians cited our work twice in its excellent 2002 position statement on male circumcision.
The Toronto Star, the National Journal, Penthouse magazine, and countless other publications have positively cited our work in recent years.
In an unprecedented event, the Journal of Urology, which in the past has been hostile to claims regarding the importance of protecting genital integrity, praised our article, "Informed consent for neonatal circumcision: an ethical and legal conundrum." The article was stated to be "worth a read by all of us who perform newborn circumcision. I suspect that it will be used to support the argument of those who would favor outlawing routine circumcision." Journal of Urology, October 2002, Volume 168, pp. 1650-1.
Frank Bates, Professor of Law, University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, extensively and approvingly cites our work in his article, "Males, Medical Mutilation and the Law: Some Recent Developments," in the August 2001 issue of the Journal of Law and Medicine.
The Association for Prenatal & Perinatal Psychology & Health featured our work in an article entitled, "Fighting Circumcision." Human Rights Internet, Gender Watch, the Bay Area Progressive Directory, British Journal of Urology International, and Blackwell Science have all acknowledged our work. The FGM Network also cites our work on genital mutilation of both males and females (ww.fgmnetwork.org).
Our work has been recognized by The Daily Californian (the student newspaper for the University of California at Berkeley), the Independent (Durham, North Carolina) and in Lenore T. Szuchman's and Frank Muscarella's book Psychological Perspectives on Human Sexuality (New York: John Wiley & Sons, 2000), at p. 471.
ARC's work was praised in a 2002 article in the Virginia Journal of Social Policy and the LLaw by Geoffrey P. Miller entitled "Circumcision: Cultural-Legal Analysis" and also drew a citation as an organization of lawyers committed to challenging the legality of circumcision by Matthew Giannetti in 2000 recent Iowa Law Review article "Circumcision and the American Academy of Pediatrics: Should Scientific Misconduct Produce Trade Association Liability?"
